Some people said to get a DI box, YES this would give you a fatter tone in the digital recording world. Some people are saying you need great advanced playing skills to have a fat tone? NO! Your skills has nothing to do with your tone far as fat tone is Concerned. So if you want that sound or a fat tone for your direct recordings you need some more gear.
